Striving for excellence in fundamental, translational and clinical research is a core mission of the Department of Paediatrics. Under the leadership and direction of Dr. Annie Huang, Associate Chair of Research, our Vision is to make disruptive/innovative science an integral part of training and clinical care for children across all paediatric disciplines at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and all of our partnered hospitals within the Child Care Network. Our Mission is to leverage our unique strengths to develop new science/collaborations, train, recruit and retain scholars with skills for transformative, impactful paediatric care.

2025 International Day of Women and Girls in Science
There was an fascinating study recently in the Journal of Science on children’s perceptions of scientists. The study compiled information from 20,860 drawings by students aged 5 to 18 over five decades. The main conclusion is quite encouraging: when asked to draw a scientist, school-age kids in the United States are increasingly sketching women.

Newly Appointed Chair of Paediatric Scholarship and Research Education, Dr. Peter Gill
Dr. Peter Gill has been appointed as the Chair of the Resident Research and Scholarship Committee and Director of the Research in Residency program. Dr. Gill is a highly experienced and respected member of the Resident Research and Scholarship Committee, having served as a mentor to numerous residents in the formal mentorship program and resident research and scholarship project facilitator since 2018. He has also played a key role in introducing clinical research to our second-year residents as Course Co-Director of a 3-day resident research course since 2020. We are confident that Dr. Gill will provide continued leadership and innovation to the program.
We would also like to express our gratitude to Dr. Mark Friedberg for his successful tenure as Chair of the Resident Research and Scholarship Committee and Director of the Research in Residency. Since assuming this role in 2018, Dr. Friedberg has demonstrated unwavering dedication to fostering research and scholarship among our trainees in the Department of Paediatrics. His contributions have been instrumental in shaping the research teaching curriculum, thereby supporting the development of future paediatric scholars, clinical investigators, and researchers. Dr. Friedberg's leadership, innovative spirit, and vision for the program have played a pivotal role in the growing success of the PIPs (Paediatric Investigators, Scientists, Scholars Pathway) training pipeline.
