The Faculty Development Office and committee, under the direction of Dr. Indra Narang, support faculty members through the areas of career development in:

  • Teaching/education skills
  • Research and clinical care skills
  • Mentorship
  • Work-life balance
  • Assistance with CDCP/triennial review

  • Academic leave/retirement planning and promotions

Faculty Development Resources

Faculty Development Committee (FDC)

The Faculty Development Committee (FDC) supports faculty in their professional growth by providing resources and opportunities for career advancement, mentorship, and well-being. It oversees three key subcommittees: 

  • Career Development (Co-Leads: Drs. Karen Leslie & Vicky Ng) – Assists new faculty with career planning and professional growth opportunities. 
  • Physician Wellness (Co-Leads: Drs. Susanna Talarico & Nirit Bernhard) – Promotes physician well-being through support resources, discussion groups, and wellness initiatives. 
  • Scholarly Activity (Co-Leads: Drs. Anu Wadhwa & Mike Zappitelli) – Encourages academic excellence and research engagement among faculty. 

The FDC connects faculty with mentorship, training, and support to foster success in clinical care, education, and research.

This orientation provides an overview of current faculty members, the program structure, and the cultural environment at SickKids. It serves as a guide to help faculty build a strong foundation for success in Clinical, Education, and Research by outlining key steps, available resources, and an overview of business operations.

Academic Promotions

Promotion in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto recognizes academic excellence in Creative Professional Activity (including Quality Improvement), Teaching and Education, or Research. Faculty must demonstrate excellence in at least one of these areas. The Faculty Development Office hosts an annual information session, typically in February or March, to guide candidates through the process.
